The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has given petroleum product merchants 24 hours to return to the official depots’ pricing of fuel or face repercussions.

The warning was given by NUPENG on Saturday.According to a statement issued by the Union’s President and General Secretary, Prince William Akporeha and Afolabi Olawale. Unscrupulous marketers are selling PMS (Petrol) from depots at rates well above the official rate, in order to force unlawful price rises at the pump.

NUPENG vowed to name and disgrace the impacted merchants if they maintained their unlawful actions aimed at exacerbating Nigerians’ hardships.

“Our attention and empathy have been drawn to the harrowing experiences and pains of Nigerians due to the exploitative and unscrupulous activities. And tendencies of Petroleum Products Marketers who are taking advantage of the apparent gaps and teething challenges in the implementation of the Petroleum Industry. Act to enrich themselves at the expense of the Country and the people,” the statement said.

“It is evident that the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, is still subject to a subsidy system. And we find it depressing and concerning that these unscrupulous Marketers are selling Petrol from depots at rates well in excess of the official rate.”

“We are giving these Marketers twenty-four (24) hours, beginning at midnight on Sunday, February 27, 2022, to return to the official rate. Or we will identify and disgrace them as public enemies, in addition to additional punishments.”

NUPENG also asked its personnel in all of our zones to prepare lists of gas stations stockpiling supplies during the day and selling them at excessive prices at night in preparation for future fines.

“These also include Petroleum Supplies depots, which may choose to stockpile products as a result of our judgment on this topic.”
