Rema wins big, Burna Boy loses three awards at 2023 MTV EMAs

Rema, a well-known musician from Nigeria, wins the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards’ “Best Afrobeats” category for the first time.

Recall that for the 2023 ceremony, the event planners included a brand-new category called “Best Afrobeats.”

The original nominations were Nigerian musicians Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema in addition to French sensation Aya Nakamura.

The Israel-Hamas conflict forced the cancellation of the award ceremony; nonetheless, the winners were still presented on Sunday, November 6, 2023.

Diamond Platnumz of Tanzania won the title of “Best African Act,” while Rema was proclaimed the winner of the “Best Afrobeats” category.

Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” lost to Jung Kook and Latto’s “Seven” in the “Best Collaboration” category.

The three prizes that Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, was not able to win were Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best Live Performer.

This occurred soon after he was not selected for any of the seven BET Hip-Hop Awards in 2023.

At the 2023 MTV EMAs, American singer Taylor Swift lead the winners with three awards: “Best Video,” “Best Artist,” and “Best Live.”
