In an interview, she told Angie Martinez about her experience.

She initially assumed it was a prank when she was brought up from her hotel, but reality struck in when she was given a filthy, odorous jail garb.

She was worried that she might not make it.

The Grammy Award winner revealed that the only things in her small prison cell were some blankets, a floor, and some Kleenex.

For two long, hard days, she was cut off from the outside world and had no idea where she was.

The singer’s clothing smelt terrible, and she broke down in tears the moment she saw it. Though she had no idea whether or when she would be set free, she hoped.

Tems claimed that she forged relationships with other female prisoners, a large number of whom were held for minor infractions, some of which were brought on by corrupt jail guards.

This whole drama began on December 12, 2020, after Tems and another musician performed in Uganda. They were accused of violating COVID-19 standards.

In her words: “I thought I wasn’t gonna come out. I thought I was seeing it for a reason like maybe I was meant to help the people.

I was settling in because I adapted real quick and as I was walking in I started to cry because they gave me my uniform and it stunk because they don’t wash it.

It was a small room and there was nothing, there’s just the floor they give you blankets and tissues and you’re just on the floor, no bed and I did it for two days.

I didn’t even know I was going to get out, I didn’t have any ears on the ground nobody told me anything.

Outside everyone was like ‘free Tems, free Omah lay but inside I was just hopeful, waiting.”
